'Cat' On a Hot Film Projector?
Yeah, that's a terrible pun. But Variety reports that producer Stephen Byrd is planning to make a film adaptation of Cat On a Hot Tin Roof, starring the all-black cast of his current Broadway revival.
From Variety:
Byrd said he had secured the rights to a new film version of "Cat" from the estate of scribe Tennessee Williams and intends to begin lensing in 2009, subject to the availability of thesps Terrence Howard, Anika Noni Rose, James Earl Jones and Phylicia Rashad.
He added that he also has the rights to Williams' play "A Streetcar Named Desire" for a potential multiracial pic adaptation.
But, as New York Mag's Vulture points out, "This is one of those Variety articles that doesn't really have any details or anything, and as you read it you realize that there's probably actually no solid plans to film Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but people really want to so they figured they might as well tell Variety about it."
Cat On a Hot Tin Roof was shut out of this year's Tony Award nominations, but ticket sales have been strong and the play has recouped its initial costs, in time to turn a solid profit before the end of its limited run June 22.
