Shedding Some Light on Bale's Dark Night
As most internet readers already know, The Dark Knight star Christian Bale was arrested yesterday for allegedly assaulting his mother and sister at London's Dorchester Hotel. The actor was held for more than four hours after voluntarily visiting the police station for questioning, and was then released on bail, according to reports. Bale was not formally charged, but was asked to return in September pending investigation results. The actor has denied the allegations.
Today, London's Daily Mail reports that the arrest came after a shouting match, not a physical altercation, which resulted from Bale's mother insulting his wife. (Apparently "verbal assault" is a crime in London, though.)
The source said: ‘Christian was stressed, but he didn’t lay a finger on anyone. Instead, he flew off the handle and cussed his mother. He just got very loud because his mother was saying some very outrageous things about him, and his wife...’
‘Normally Christian would just call a friend and go out to a pub to cool off. But he was literally trapped into this confrontation with his mother and sister because there was an army of fans and paparazzi outside.’
The Daily Mail article goes on to say that Bale has been deeply affected by the death of his Dark Knight co-star Heath Ledger, with whom he became friends when they both portrayed versions of Bob Dylan's in last year's I'm Not There.
A friend told the Mail, "Christian pretends he's calm and collected, but you really started to see the cracks in his façade in January, right after Heath Ledger had died. Christian was in the middle of a very brief break from work when he heard the news, and it was massive blow to him. They had become very close during the making of The Dark Knight and Christian went into virtual hiding for the six weeks after Heath was found dead." In a recent interview, Bale admitted that he has been depressed and has experienced bouts of insomnia.
Blog Stage doesn't usually like to trade in celebrity gossip, but it is a shame that Bale, considered one of the more "normal" celebrities of our time, has been involved in this sort of debacle, especially after Ledger's tragic death in January already cast a pall over the comic book movie. We doubt this will put any Batman sequels in jeopardy, though.
Despite the setback, The Dark Knight continues to break box office records, earning nearly $25 million on Monday and approaching $200 million in ticket sales since opening last week.
