Terrence Howard Reacts to 'Iron Man' Casting Change
Last week, the news was reported that actor Don Cheadle would be replacing Terrence Howard as Tony Stark/Iron Man buddy Jim Rhodes in Marvel Studios' upcoming Iron Man 2. Reports indicated that the role was re-cast after "negotiations with Howard fell through over financial differences, among other reasons."
But Terrence Howard seemed pretty surprised by the news of his high-profile replacement.
According to CHUD, in an interview for NPR's "Weekend Edition," Howard said:
It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. [The contract] just... up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up.
Of course, we understand that any conflict involving "financial differences," or the loss of a job in general, will result in unavoidable "he said, she said" quote-making. But whose side are you on: Marvel for replacing Howard with Cheadle (whose character will now likely assume a larger role in the sequel), or Howard for standing up for himself?
Director Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey, Jr. are still attached to the sequel of this summer's superhero blockbuster.
In other Iron Man 2 news, IESB reports that Samuel L. Jackson's character Nick Fury, who had about three seconds of screen time after the closing credits of Iron Man, will have a bigger role in the sequel. Honestly, it would be pretty hard for him to have a smaller role than that cameo, don't you think? (Unless of course his contract "disappeared" with Howard's, so maybe it's a good question after all...)
