Golden Globes: The Day After

Golden-globe_011405 I think we all know the Golden Globes are a bit of a joke...but does last night's results mean Slumdog Millionaire is a sure thing Oscar night? I hope so, but I'm not convinced. The only thing Hollywood seems to enjoy more than the underdog is starting to grumble about how "it wasn't that great" once the underdog rises up.

Still, it doesn't look like there's much in the way to rival Slumdog's trip to the podium Oscar night. Benjamin Button is doing well, but is ultimately lacking the one ingredient Slumdog has in abundance: heart. Milk poses a threat, but the smart money seems to think that Sean Penn for Best Actor is their real shot--a position looking increasingly threatened by Mickey Rourke's win last night.

While I think the Globes mostly got it right--I have no problem with Kate Winslet winning two awards because, well, she's Kate Winslet--I wouldn't put too much stock in their results relecting the Oscars. They're journalists, not Academy voters. They didn't even nominate Josh Brolin for Milk, the only actor who really poses a threat to Heath Ledger winning Best Supporting Actor. They picked Babel for Best Picture a couple years ago. And let's never forget that when Frances McDormand was nominated for Best Actress for Fargo...they went with Madonna.
