Hey, Lady with the Thing! Jerry Lewis to Make B'way Directorial Debut
Jerry Lewis will make his Broadway directorial debut with a musical version of his 1963 wacky film comedy The Nutty Professor. Lewis co-wrote and starred in the movie as a nerdy academic who transforms into a swinging lounge lizard named Buddy Love. Eddie Murphy launched a series of successful remakes in 1996.This new version will feature music by Marvin Hamlisch and book and lyrics by Rupert Holmes, who is also at work on a musical version of Secondhand Lions as we reported last week. The target opening is during the 2010-11 Broadway season.
Lewis was last seen on Broadway in the revival of Damn Yankees. He was supposed to star in a revival of Hellzapoppin' in the 1970s, but it closed out of town. Interesting tidbit, according to Newsweek he is tied with the Pope as the fourth-most recognized person on earth.
Plans for Professor began in 2006 when Lewis announced he hoped to have a pre-Broadway try-out at the Old Globe in 2007, then a Main Stem debut in 2008. Michael Andrews was supposed to star. Lewis saw him perform at a private party, just like they used to do on The Dick Van Dyke Show. In the current press release, no casting has been announced.
