Reporter's Notebook I
Back Stage does not trespass on an actor's personal life. It is discreet. Yet, more than one actor I've interviewed has expressed concern that I might cross the line.
One well-known actress asked me not to question her about her celebrity boyfriend, which has been grist for the tabloids. Another worried that I might let the world know her male parent is not her biological father. Who cares? It's a bit of information that is of no interest to anyone, especially as the actress in question is virtually unknown outside small circles.
The larger issue is why would Back Stage include that kind of information in stories about craft and career paths? Admittedly, there's a possibility these personal back stories have some bearing on acting and professional trajectories, though usually they don't.
As for the starlet with the beau crisis, we talked about the fame game and what it cost her without touching on lover boy. Perhaps some readers would be happier if Back Stage dished the dirt. Undoubtedly, it would make for juicy reading for those who enjoy peeking and prying.
I for one find it numbingly dull and am profoundly relieved it's not part of my assignment.

Agreed. Thanks for reporting with integrity and respect for actors - the qualities for which Back Stage is known.
