Nathan Lane Guest Starring on 'Modern Family'
Tony Award-winning actor Nathan Lane will be making a guest appearance early in the second season of the ABC sitcom Modern Family, series producer Steve Levitan announced during this weekend's press tour.
Lane will be playing the flamboyant Pepper, who is a friend of Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). Although there has been previous mention of Pepper on the show, Lane's appearance will mark the first time Modern Family audiences will actually see the character. He is set to appear in only one episode; although it has been reported to be early in the season, the exact episode date has not been announced.
According to New York Magazine, producers are trying to steer clear of hiring too many big-name guest stars for its second season, but Levitan said that "Nathan was just too perfect for the part."
Obviously. Anyone who has seen The Birdcage will agree that when Lane asked to be part of the show, it would've been nearly impossible to turn him away. As both a fan of Lane and Modern Family, I am extremely excited about this. Aside from Lane's numerous starring roles on Broadway and in movies (currently he's playing Gomez in The Addams Family on Broadway), he has also received multiple Emmy nominations for his appearances on various shows. iVillage Entertainment predicted that with the growing popularity and success of Modern Family, Lane's role could provide a relatively good opportunity for another nom.
Modern Family's second season will premiere on Sept. 22 on ABC.
