I'm So Retro
Retro Radio Christmas Cavalcade opened last night to a bustling audience and reviewers from BackStage West! (BTW, I have nothing to do with nor do I know any of the reviewers from BackStage, so they could pan me for all they care. Course, if they love the show, I'd have to whole-heartedly agree that they were right!) It's a relief to have this show open, so that I can concentrate on my next show, Magnum Opus, which is opening on Friday. You heard me right. I'm the crazy lady who thought it was possible to open two shows in the same week without losing my mind. So far, so good.
I love this little 1940s radio show. I get to play with my voice for a bunch of characters, sing three part harmonies and carols, and experience a piece of performance history. Ah, the days of radio plays. My grandparents sure remember them. World War II was raging and the future of Europe was tenuous at best, but radio plays abounded and brought wholesome humor, spirit, and hope to it's listeners.
And oh how I love stepping into my retro forties threads. Brings me right into the world of the
play. I'm one of those actors that needs the right shoes to finish the character. Our costume designer's anal attention to detail was just the right fit for this anal actor.
Today: fielding a bazillion strike phone calls at work, heading to a commercial callback (I started the day with this mantra: I'm going to book a national commercial today!), gearing up for another show tonight, waiting to hear from the new agent I met with last week, and still reeling from a funny run-in with James Cromwell in which he called me "attractive" as I pretended to duck past him as if I didn't know who he was. I'll take it.
