For The Love of Audition Tapes : To LA or Not to LA

Ash_ontape The taping process.  Oh, what a love.  What a frustration.  What a -- ?!

So I put this big project on tape last Wednesday evening with my coach, Peter Kelley (who's awesome, by the way, if anyone needs an audition guy).  The audition was for one of the leads in this awesome new sci-fi Fox pilot, something that's kinda like a combination of Lost and ... uh, something reconnaissance-y.

Very cool script.  And most of the pilot scripts I've read this season have sucked.  Except NBC's Kings.  I'm still pining over that one.

So I work on the sides for a few days, schedule the appointment with my coach, go in and tape the thing.  The camera (read the last post about idiocy) I recently purchased is the same one my fancy-pants coach has, so post-taping he gave me the tape so I could go home and compress the video myself.  I do so, and get the thing online by 6:28pm.  I miss my agent by a minute -- my manager had a dinner meeting -- so neither of them saw it till Thursday.  Still haven't received any feedback from new Awesome Agent, though Fabulous Manager called to say she was delighted and very happy with it.

So now it's a waiting game, like everything else.  I feel like I'm way too anxious sometimes.

I've put three other things on tape in the past -- one for The Mall: The Musical which ended up being renamed something slightly different and just premiered on MTV... and totally sucked.  Next was for this AMAZING NBC Universal pilot that didn't end up going due to the writer's strike hitting about a week after the auditions -- a dark indie-feeling dramatic tape that I still use on my reel.  Finally, a tape for NBC's Kings which is shooting NOW and was the best pilot I've ever read, ever.  Also using that audition tape sometimes, as I've never worked so hard on anything.

I love putting things on tape even though it's always such a long-shot (the cast-out-of-LA stuff), and my coach thinks it's relatively pointless.  So I'm wondering if perhaps I should just say screw it if I get good feedback on this Fox thing, and jump on a plane to LA to audition in person.

Some thoughts, some thoughts.

You got me curious so I just checked the IMDB listing for Kings. Love Ian McShane (I assume he's still attached? No character name listed)

Thanks for the Peter Kelley info.
