TastiSkank-in-Training

1435030450_l Have you heard of a great band called TastiSkank?  I discovered them about six months or so ago on MySpace and haven’t been able to get enough of them ever since. I even met one of the girls at an audition once and have been waiting for my opportunity to see them do a live show ever since!  They sing funny songs about one of my favorite subjects, boyfriends!  My favorite song is 'I Heart Dirty Boys with No Money,'  because it reminds me of all the boys that I get crushes on that hang around at the coffee shop.

Hanging on a bulletin board at the theatre a few weeks ago was a poster saying that they would be playing at Joe’s Pub.  I was so excited!!  I quickly told my all my best Spring Awakening cast mates and Brooklyn buds and made plans to spend my Monday night off with the girls of TastiSkank.

But something started happening as the days to TastiSkank got closer.  People started dropping out of my TastiSkank crew.  ('Oh, that was THAT night…I have to go to a birthday party that night.’  'My parent are in town.'  'The show doesn’t start until 11:30pm?'  'I have work/audition/rehearsal tomorrow.')  Now I admit, I wasn’t the most proactive in the days prior to TastiSkank in replacing those that dropped out.  I just assumed surely someone would be going with me.  I mean who could resist a band they’ve never heard of named TastiSkank on a Monday night?

I finally realized around 7:30PM that I didn’t know where I was meeting my friends before the show. Oh, wait….I don’t have any friends!!! And then I got a little desperate, phoning and pleading, and selling, but even those that showed interested seemed to have legitimate reasoning to why they couldn’t make it out to see TastiSkank.  I guess if no one else wanted to go to TastiSkank, why should I go?  I finally gave up and decided to make tea, pull on some pajama pants and spend my Monday night off on the coach reading SELF magazine. (Boooooooo.)

A little while later, my roommate gets home.  Here’s our conversation: (My roommate’s name is Dell, like the computer!!  I’m Lemon.  That’s what the hipster kids in Brooklyn call me.)

Dell:  What are you doing home?  I thought you were going to see that band tonight.
Lemon:  It doesn’t start till 11:30….but I’m not going anymore.
Dell:  Why not? I thought you loved TastiSkank.
Lemon:  I don’t love them THAT much….besides (sniffle, sniffle), I don’t have ANY FRIENDS!!!
Dell:  Wait…what?
Lemon:  No one can go with me…but I don’t really care because a band named TastiSkank is pretty stupid anyways…(hiccup-like sobs).
Dell: Why don't you just go by yourself?  You’ll have a great time.  They might not do another show for awhile and they’re like your favorite band.
Lemon:  Do you wanna go with me?
Dell: ummmmmm…….well, I have to work early tomorrow morning….but seriously, you should go, you have to go….who knows?  Maybe you’ll meet a cute boy.

Dell quickly retreats to her room.  I guess she was going to go to sleep, so she could get up early for work.  Her message stuck with me.  Go by myself?  I guess I could go by myself.  I mean, I’m the one who thought of the idea to go in the first place.  I’m the one who has all their songs downloaded.  Of course I would have fun even if I went by myself!  And maybe I would meet a cute boy!!!!  Suddenly I felt a surge of motivation.  Sometimes Dell is smarter than me.

I then decided not only would I go, but I was gonna look hot at the TastiSkank show!  I pulled on some heeled boots, put on lots of eyeliner, and called a car to take me into Manhattan.  I arrived  in time to order a ginger martini and find a place to sit at a little table in front of the stage before the show started.

So now you’re wondering, how was the show?   Everything I imagined and more!  Totally tasti and skankilicious!  I didn’t really meet any cute boys, but I laughed my ass off, got a little tipsy, and made friends with some people at my table.  Lesson learned; never pass up the opportunity to see your favorite band, even if that means going by yourself.

Also, those girls are amazing!!  They are two girls who have worked a lot in Broadway shows. They are funny, beautiful, charming, and have awesome voices!  Some day I want to be as cool as the TastiSkank girls...Hey, I’m in my first Broadway show and sometimes I write funny stuff!!  Maybe I can consider myself to be a TastiSkank-in-Training.

Glad you went! Sounds fun...and I'll check 'em out on MySpace when I get a chance.

It's definitely worth going places by yourself sometimes - and your roomie is right, sometimes you do end up meeting a cute guy! Earlier this year I wanted to go to a theater company/sketch show -- they were going to be holding auditions soon and I hadn't seen one of their shows in a long time, so I really wanted to go and re-familarize myself with their style.

Their Saturday night show approached & I had no one to go with me -but I said the hell with it and went alone. Met a cute guy in line (also by himself) & we ended up sitting together and he asked for my number/email and gave me his. We ended up going out briefly...unfortunately this story doesn't have a happy ending though. He told me he'd had a great time with me but he was still in the midst of an "Emotional rollercoaster" with his ex-gf, who had started calling him again & he felt he owed it to them to give it one more try.

My point though (I do have one) - going places alone can be a great way to meet guys. It's not that easy most of the time to just randomly meet new men in the city. That's why everyone does online dating and speed-dating and other horrors.

So if there's a concert or play you really want to see, and you have to go alone - doll yourself up so you look hot, smile, and take a chance. What do you have to lose?

Finally! Someone else who loves TastiSkank! Haha. They're great. I saw Kate Reinders in Wicked twice and she was amazing.

Seeing the show on Saturday. Break a leg!
