Each One Teach One.
Tonight I went to a SAG meeting about the Booz Allen Hamilton study of the commercial contracts. Since commercials have been my bread and butter for the past few years, I want to be sure I have all of the information I need in order to formulate an opinion and weigh in during the contract negotiations.
The amount of information presented was overwhelming at first, but as other SAG members (with much more experience than I with the inner-workings of SAG) began to ask questions and state opinions, many things became clearer. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement before I went in, so I can't talk about specifics, but the clearest thing is this: It is so important to be able to make informed decisions. Even if the information seems too complicated, or too boring. Even if you think "someone else will take care of it", or it "isn't your thing". If this business is "your thing"; If making enough money to pay your rent is "your thing", then it is important. I urge everyone to find out as much as possible so that we don't all get screwed, which is a very real possibility.
As I sat there, I looked around the room a couple of times and saw people I thought I knew, but then realized that I didn't really know them - I've just been seeing them on TV a zillion times a day in TV commercials. I saw fellow blogger Tom Kiesche as well. It was great to see a packed house...and to be part of a group of actors who understand (again, many with much more experience than I) that this is a business and you have to have the tools to win. Sorry if I sound preachy - I don't mean to, but this is the first SAG meeting of this sort that I've ever attended, and it was eye-opening, so I want to share and urge everyone to get informed. If you are already informed, each one, teach one.
