Halloween: The Actor's Holiday
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. In part because it's right by my birthday, but mostly because it involves two things I love: costumes and candy.
Really, what actor doesn't like Halloween? It's a holiday where everyone gets a little taste of the theatrical!
Most Halloweens, I end up having more than one costume, for different events.
For the actual date of Halloween, I was kind of stumped. Over the summer, I had really been considering Lady Gaga, but then several other people said that they were considering Gaga-ifying themselves, so I changed my mind. At the last minute, I found a cute yellow dress on sale at Marshall's, and I knew who I had to be...
Rachel Berry from Glee!
There's an episode where all the girls in the Glee club wear yellow dresses and sing a mash-up of "Halo" by Beyoncé and "Walkin' on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves. I wore my yellow dress, with a yellow headband (Rachel-style) and flats. I straightened my hair, and wore yellow eyeshadow with a little gold glitter, and pink lipstick. Then I got an empty slushee cup as a prop (because in the show, Rachel gets slushees thrown in her face on a regular basis) and the sheet music for "Taking Chances" by Platinum Weird (a band fronted by Kara DioGuardi; the song was covered by Celine Dion, and Rachel Berry sang it at her audition for Cabaret). I already had the sheet music, as I'd considered singing it for the Musical Theatre workshop in December. (And for the people who needed a hint on my costume, I carried around an issue of the latest Entertainment Weekly behind my sheet music, which has a picture of all the Glee Girls in their yellow dresses.)
For a Halloween party that a group at the theatre threw, the five lovely ladies in my class decided that we simply HAD to go as The Spice Girls. We actually fit the five looks pretty obviously, so it worked out. I was Sporty Spice!
I actually watched Spice World ahead of time to prepare for my role. I got to spend the night doing back-bends and high kicks (I knew the Capoeira workshop we did last year would come in handy!), and generally dancing like crazy. We all faked British dialects and went around yelling "Girl Power!", and giving the peace sign. And at one point, the DJ played "Wannabe", and we took over the dance-floor as people cheered and took pictures. It was so much fun!
I already have some great ideas for Halloween next year... Probably too early to start planning, but it's nice to dream.
