'Spider-Man' Musical Casting Call

Spiderman_white_background Various media outlets and bloggers, including our own David Sheward, have been reporting this story for the past couple days, but Back Stage is the only one with the official casting notice for the new Spider-Man musical, coming to Broadway next year! Pick up a copy of this week's issue of Back Stage, or visit our online casting center, for more info.

From the official Back Stage casting notice:

Telsey + Company is casting Spider-Man, a new Broadway musical. Julie Taymor, dir.; Bono & The Edge of U2, music & lyrics. Performs on Broadway in NYC.

Seeking—Peter Parker: male, 16-20s, great rock voice, can be nerdy with understated sex appeal, good sense of humor; Mary Jane: female, 16-20s, beautiful girl next door, strong pop/rock singing voice; Principal Woman: female, 25-35, any ethnicity, amazing rock vocals, think Sinead O’Connor with a Middle Eastern/Bulgarian/Greek twist, foreign, world music types a plus, foreign accents a plus. Note: Producers are casting for the above characters only at these auditions; if you are not right for these characters, you may not be seen.

Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood had performed the roles of Peter Parker and Mary Jane in a December reading, but it looks like director Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Across the Universe) is starting fresh. And with music by U2, this is gonna be huge (We don't know if it's going to be any good, but it's definitely going to be huge).

Auditions will be held July 28 at The Knitting Factory in NYC. Be sure to watch the video below, featuring audition advice from casting director Bernard Telsey (of Telsey + Company), before you go to the open call!

You can watch more Back Stage videos here, or visit the Back Stage Casting YouTube channel for these and other actor-related videos.

And in other super hero casting news, a casting agency was allegedly casting stand-ins and extras in Omaha for the sequel to the 2006 film Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer and starring Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel. OMEL Courtesy Casting posted a notice on Craigslist, which has since been removed.

I've emailed them with a question, and I've called the Knitting Factory and I haven't gotten an answer back, but I live in Missouri so I was wondering how many days should this take? Like, will there be call-backs or are they gonna decide on the spot? I want to go so bad, but I need to know so I can buy plane tickets and work some stuff out in my schedule. Any help would be excellent! Thanks!
