Wives and Lovers

Blog_p_cassidy_230 Reprise Theatre Company in L.A. has announced the cast for its December revival of the 1977 Cy Coleman-Michael Stewart musical I Love My Wife, a wife-swapping satire of the 1970s sexual revolution, which was a very daring Broadway show in its era. Jason Alexander (Reprise's artistic director), Vicki Lewis, Lea Thompson, and Patrick Cassidy (pictured, replacing the previously announced Steven Weber) star in the production, running Dec. 3-14 at the UCLA Freud Playhouse. Noted acting instructor Larry Moss directs.

The score by composer Coleman (Sweet Charity, City of Angels) and librettist-lyricst Stewart (Hello, Dolly!. Bye Bye Birdie) runs the gamut from country-western to marching band,  blues, and barrelhouse. As the second show in Alexander's first season at the helm of Reprise, this seems a more apt offering for the company's charter of staging seldom-revived musicals. It'll be interesting to see how its once-shocking subject matter plays in the Spring Awakening era. Recently the not-very-old and frequently revived Once on This Island kicked off Alexander's Reprise reign. While looking forward to Wife, we're still waiting for Reprise to pick up on such neglected golden oldies as Funny Girl and On a Clear Day.
