Back Stage asks real working actors to weigh in.
"Not having one of those, I would definitely say no. Having talent, however, I believe, will help tremendously. Willingness to take risks is certainly an asset. Oh, and the readiness to fall on one's arse during the taking of said risks: priceless! Honestly, anyone doing a master's in acting is probably doing so at a school charging an exorbitant amount of money, which will just take so much more bartending to pay off, after which said master of acting will become a professor-not an actor."

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are among producers exploring bringing a revival of Promises, Promises to Broadway. No production or full casting plan has been announced, but Playbill.com reports that a private reading of the script took place in Manhattan, during which Sean Hayes and Anne Hathaway played the leads. The project would be the first Broadway revival of the 1968 musical, about a corporate man who lends out his house for sexual liaisons but then falls for one of the office women. Producers John Gore, Beth Williams, and Harvey and Bob Weinstein are also connected to the project.
The National Alliance for Musical Theatre will soon launch a new program, the National Fund for New Musicals, that will provide grants to producers and writers during the process of creating, developing, and producing new musicals. Grants will be awarded once a year in three categories: up to $3,000 for the Early Collaboration Grant, up to $6,000 for the Project Development Grant, and up to $20,000 for the Production Grant. Casting directors Laray Mayfield (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Fight Club) and Kim Hardin (Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan) are attached to cast Maggie Lynn, the next project from writer-director Craig Brewer. The drama follows a woman as she returns home to Tennessee, where she teams with her elder brother to play country music. No actors have been attached. John Singleton and Stephanie Allain will produce.
Native Voices at the Autry has extended its deadline for the 2009 Playwrights Retreat and Festival of New Plays. The new deadline is Nov. 15. This annual event pairs three playwrights with professional directors, dramaturges, actors, and designers for a weeklong retreat in San Diego and L.A. in June 2009. The selected plays will receive public staged readings at the La Jolla Playhouse and the Autry National Center. Only completed full-length plays, plays for young audiences, and/or one-person shows that are text-based will be considered. It seems foreign policy isn't just for presidential candidates anymore. Earlier this month, Actors' Equity Association and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security rejected a visa application for Austrian actor Martin Niedermair, who was to reprise his role in Barrie Kosky's solo musical adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart at UCLA Live's International Theatre Festival in L.A. Niedermair originated the role in Kosky's native Australia and received critical acclaim and a spot at the Edinburgh International Festival in Scotland. But the tour was stopped short in the States when Equity determined that Niedermair's English-speaking role could be performed by an American.
