Christmas Comes Early: Free Events from IFP
The Gotham Independent Film Awards Series is underway, screening and honoring tons of indie films and filmmakers. Some events are free and max ticket price is $12 -- perfect recession-proof entertainment! Everything is brought to you by IFP, the nation's oldest and largest organization of indie filmmakers.
There are tons of panels and discussions and Q&As. Here's a breakdown of all the goings-on:
MoMA Modern Mondays hosted by Bennett Miller (Capote)
Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. at MoMA's Education & Research Center
MoMA's Associate Curator, Josh Siegel, and IFP's Senior Director of Programming, Milton Tabbot, are joined by this year's nominees for Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You. Participating filmmakers include: Antonio Campos (Afterschool), Taylor Greeson (Meadowlark), Nina Paley (Sita Sings the Blues), and Tom Quinn (The New York Parade).
Breakthrough Directors
Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. at the DGA Theater
Filmmaker Magazine's Scott Macaulay moderates a conversation with this year's Breakthrough Director nominees -- Antonio Campos (Afterschool), Dennis Dortch (A Good Day To Be Black & Sexy), Lance Hammer (Ballast), Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy), and Alex Rivera (Sleep Dealer) -- sharing their experiences on making their first features and the state of independent film. ($12)
Volver
Dec. 1 at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m.
BAM Cinematek re-visits Penelope Cruz in her Oscar-nominated performance in Pedro Almodovar's Volver.
Melvin Van Peebles
Dec. 1 at 6:15 and 8 p.m.
The Museum of Modern Art, which gave godfather of indie film Melvin Van Peebles his first retrospective in 1989, will present his remarkable first feature, Story of a 3-Day Pass (1968), and a preview of his most recent feature, the exuberant Confessionsofa Ex-Doofus-ItchyFooted MuthA. Both screenings will be introduced by Van Peebles.
Breakthrough Actors
Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the DGA Theater.
Entertainment Weekly Film Critic Lisa Schwarzbaum moderates a conversation with some of the most talked actors of the year: Melissa Leo( Frozen River), Rosemarie DeWitt (Rachel Getting Married), Rebecca Hall (Vicky Christina Barcelona), Alejandro Polanco (Chop Shop), and Micheal J. Smith, Sr.(Ballast). All are nominated for the Breakthrough Actor Award. ($12)
Milk
Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. at MoMA
Gus Van Sant introduces this special screening of Milk, starring Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, with Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, Diego Luna, and James Franco. The film opens theatrically in NYC on Nov. 26. Van Sant will do a Q&A after the screening.
Taxicab Confessions
Dec. 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tribeca Film Center Screening Room
Preview the 13th edition of the Emmy-winning documentary series Taxicab Confessions: New York, New York, directed by Joe and Harry Gantz, which will air on HBO on Dec 8. (The event is free, but you must RSVP.)
Bart Meets Nevins
