On Monday, a group of self-described moderates on SAG's national board fired national executive director Doug Allen and replaced him with David White, former general counsel for the guild, and John T. McGuire, a SAG senior adviser and former associate national executive director. In our continuing series of interviews, Strike Watch talks with Paul Christie, a national board member from New York and the guild's former 2nd national vice president.

Kate Winslet is picking up so many awards prior to the Oscars, I can't help but worry things won't go her way on the big night. One of the many things I love about this brilliant actor is how frank she has been in the press about wanting to win. She should have won for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Or for Little Children. Will The Reader finally make this her year?
As for the rest: A fairly, but happily, predictable night at the SAG Awards. The TV categories were ruled by John Adams and 30 Rock, with the drama awards being split by Hugh Laurie of House, Sally Field of Brothers & Sisters, and the ensemble of Mad Men. But what do the film awards mean for the upcoming Oscars? It should be interesting, as Female Actor in a Supporting Role winner Kate Winslet will be in the Lead Actress category opposite Meryl Streep come Oscars. I think there's going to be a few surprises, as this leaves the Supporting Actress category wide open. And I wouldn't say Sean Penn has a lock on Best Actor...Mickey Rourke is breathing down his neck. The broadcast is either going to end up being very predictable, or highly unexpected.

Tax incentives, seemingly, continue to work their magic. New York City figures to receive more than a 6:1 return on its tax program, according to a recent study by Ernst & Young, reports Michael Cieply in the NYT's Arts Beat blog. New York State offers 30 percent tax rebate on all below-the-line costs related to film and TV production. New York City kicks in an additional 5 percent.
According to the study, New York State could be expected to spend $215 million on tax credits and receive $404 million in tax revenues, a whopping 88 percent return on investment. The job-creation figures are also encouraging.
A couple months ago, New York actor Nick Spangler (The Fantasticks) won the 13th season of The Amazing Race with his sister and teammate Starr. Now, we hear that another professional entertainer wants to reach the finish line:
Multi-talented screen veteran Mike White (the writer/producer/director/actor whose credits include The School of Rock, Chuck & Buck, Freaks and Geeks, The Good Girl, and more) will be competing in the upcoming 14th season of the CBS reality competition show.

Because of scheduling conflicts and a delayed opening, I was not able to see the Roundabout revival of Pal Joey until Jan. 23, several weeks after it had opened. I think I saw a much better show than many of colleagues who viewed it just before or just after the opening, the traditional dates that first and second night critics are admitted. Understudy Matthew Risch had stepped into the leading role of Joey when Tony winner Christian Hoff injured his foot. The opening was pushed back a few days. As a result, Risch did not have much rehearsal time and the reviews were generally mixed with many stating the lead was not up to the challenge.
