Casting News -- Feb. 25, 2009
- Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of director Sir Ridley Scott's Robin Hood adventure movie as Maid Marian, opposite Russell Crowe as Robin Hood. The film was being called Nottingham, but is apparently "undergoing a title change." Production begins in April.
Crowe plays Robin of Loxley in an origin story of Robin Hood that hews close to historical facts of the period. Abandoned as a child, he finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin's abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian, a strong, independent woman.
Sienna Miller was at one time attached to play the role, but exited late last year.
Grazer said Blanchett was a strong match for Crowe.
- Lipstick Jungle star Lindsay Price has been cast as one of the trio of witches in the drama pilot Eastwick, based on the 1987 feature film The Witches of Eastwick. The ABC show follows three young witches who come into their powers, one of which will be played by Price.
- A day after the CW officially greenlighted the pilot for its Melrose Place remake, Michael Rady (Swingtown) is the first actor cast in the new series. Rady will play Jonah Miller, a cute and quirky 25-year-old aspiring filmmaker who makes his living as a videographer of weddings and bar mitzvahs for the rich and famous after moving to Los Angeles with his fiancee a year ago.
- Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto announced Monday that she will be joining the cast of Woody Allen's next film, also starring Josh Brolin, Anthony Hopkins, and Naomi Watts. The film is untitled at this point, and plot details have not been revealed. Shooting begins in July in London; the film is scheduled for release in 2010.
