Musical 'Elf' and 'Secondhand Lions'; Looking Ahead to 2009-10/11

Elf The year-old production company Unique Features is developing musical versions of two movies from 2003--Elf and Secondhand Lions. While Unique is mostly concerned with movies--they have nine features in the hopper--they also have their eye on Broadway. Elf which is based on the comedy with Will Ferrell as a human raised as a titular magical creature at the North Pole, is to be workshopped this November with plans for a holiday 2010 opening. The book is by two Tony winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone). The score will be the team behind The Wedding Singer: composer Matt Sklar and lyricist Chad Beguelin.

Secondhand Lions is adapted from the sentimental comedy starring Haley Joel Osment as a shy boy spending the summer with eccentric uncles played by Michael Caine and Robert Duvall. Rupert Holmes (The Mystery of Edwin Drood) is writing the book and the songs are by Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary. A workshop is planned for 2010 with a 2011 opening. According to an interview in Broadwayworld.com, this show has been in the works since at least 2006. Just goes to show you how long it takes to bring a production to Broadway.
