GLAAD Condemns Newsweek for Hayes Column

0511 hayes The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation called today for Newsweek to issue an apology for a column that many have criticized for its anti-gay sentiment. The piece, by writer Ramin Setoodeh, derided the performance of Sean Hayes, the openly gay star of the current Broadway revival of "Promises, Promises," and suggested that Hayes and other gay actors are incapable of playing heterosexual characters. In a statement, GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios said, "Whether he intended it to or not, Ramin Setoodeh’s article in Newsweek sends a false and damaging message about gay actors by endorsing the idea that there are limits to the roles they are able to play." Hayes' "Promises" co-star Kristin Chenoweth was critical of Setoodeh in a comment she posted on Newsweek.com this week, while Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the television show "Glee," has called for a boycott of the publication.
