Fassbender Must Make Heroic Choice: 'Spider-Man' or 'X-Men' Role

Michael fassbender After a great performance in Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, as well as Steve McQueen's The Hunger last year, Michael Fassbender finds himself in the middle of a casting war for two upcoming Marvel Comics films (from different studios).

The up-and-coming actor is being pursued for a role in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: First Class, as well as Columbia Picture's Spider-Man 4, according to Showbiz411.com. If Fassbender accepts X-Men: First Class, he will play the role of young Magneto alongside recently-cast James McAvoy, starring as the young Charles Xavier. If he signs on to Spider-Man 4, Fassbender would play the main villain in the new installment of the rebooted film franchise.

As the young Magneto in X-Men: First Class, Fassbender would be starring in the role originated by Sir Ian McKellen in a film that depicts the early friendship between Magneto and Professor X, before they became bitter enemies. As the super-villain in Spider-Man 4, Fassbender would be part of a total makeover of the franchise that returns to Peter Parker's high school beginnings.

Fassbender will next be seen in the upcoming film Jonah Hex, starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox; he will also play Edward Rochester in the remake of Jane Eyre, which is set to be released in March 2011, according to the Daily News.

Even though Spider-Man is one of my favorite superheroes and I believe Fassbender will do a great job with the villain role, the chance to star as Magneto seems like a much better offer. The new Spider-Man franchise, with a different actor taking over for Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Jamie Bell is reportedly the front runner), just isn't very exciting. X-Men: First Class, directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass), looks to be a much better film, and the chance to star as one of the most iconic super-villains in the comic book world sounds just too good to pass up. (Plus, the German-born actor showed his ability to speak German in Inglorious Basterds -- a skill that would certainly be useful in portraying Magneto's early years as a German Jewish boy who is sent to the concentration camps during World War II.)

But which role do you think Fassbender should choose?
