Trailer Park

A slew of trailers for movies I'm very interested in have hit the web lately--and oddly, none of the trailers themselves interest me at all. Chief among these is "The Social Network," director David Fincher's flick about the founders of Facebook. With a script by Aaron Sorkin, based on the book by Ben Mezrich, the behind-the-scenes participants are what excite me about the film, not the fairly blah trailer (above). First of all, it seems like they spend a lot of time coming up with this revolutionary "Facebook" idea--talking about connecting friends over the computer, etc.--when really they could have summed it up by saying "Let's rip off MySpace, only better!" Also, not sure the choral version of "Creep" really works as the background music. But I do love the tagline: "You don't get to over 500 million friends without making a few enemies," which hints at a smart, fun film. And I miss Sorkin's movie scripts, "Charlie Wilson's War" notwithstanding. "The American President" is a virtually flawless piece of writing and I'm hoping for some "Malice"-worthy quotable lines in the vein of "I am God!" in this flick. Here's hoping the sequel can focus on the battle to rid the site of Scrabulous

The other trailer that has almost talked me out of my excitement for the movie is for the upcoming Ben Affleck-directed "The Town."

I've really looked forward to this one, especially because I think Affleck's "Gone Baby Gone" is a near-perfect piece of filmmaking. But I found myself zoning out during this trailer, which comes complete with overpowering musical score to remind us this film is important, dammit. That said, I love this cast (including Affleck, Jeremy Renner, and Rebecca Hall) and have the highest respect for Affleck as a filmmaker so this is still at the top of my list.
