Watch Eric Stoltz as Original Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future'

Eric stoltz as marty mcfly

It's one of the most famous stories of Hollywood re-casting in film history: Actor Eric Stoltz, who was originally chosen to star as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, was replaced by Michael J. Fox early in the film's production. The rest is history.

But Stoltz was actually five weeks into shooting the role when director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis made the decision to change his lead actor. Now, in advance of the release of the "Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy" on Blu-ray later this month, you can watch some of the original never-before-seen footage of Stoltz as McFly.

Watch this bonus clip from the upcoming DVD, in which Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, and Bob Gale explain why Michael J. Fox was hired to replace Eric Stoltz:

The filmmakers acknowledge that while Stoltz is a very talented actor, he was not adept enough at comedy to get the laughs that the screenwriters had intended.

"I had to make this horrific decision, which was very heartbreaking for everybody," Zemeckis says. Luckily, he was able to convince the studio to let him re-shoot five weeks of work. Fox stepped into a career-changing role, and Back to the Future grossed $381 million worldwide and spawned two sequels.

The "Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy" will be released on Blu-ray on Oct. 26, 2010.
