Below are a few highlights from this week's West Coast notices, compiled by West Coast Casting Editor Cassie Carpenter:

Child Actor Found for Lead Role in 'Dance of the Mirlitons'

THR reports that Chloe Moretz, Jackie Earle Haley, and Bailee Madison have joined the cast of the independent feature film Dance of the Mirlitons, which already features Kristen Bell as the "young, overbearing mother of an overweight would-be ballerina who will stop at nothing to make her star." Madison will star as her daughter, while Moretz will play Madison's nemesis. Haley will play "a subtly sadistic Russian ballet teacher of the highest order."

Earlier this year, Back Stage published a casting notice for Dance of Mirlitons, specifically seeking girls for the lead role of young ballerina Jesse Urchin. THR adds:

[Writer-director Evan] Greenberg and the producers spent months trying to cast the lead for the role, which has the potential for a breakout in the way Billy Elliot and Little Miss Sunshine proved a launching point for actors Jamie Bell and Abigail Breslin.

'DANCE OF THE MIRLITONS'

FMW Casting is casting Dance of the Mirlitons, an independent feature film from the producer of Juno and Up in the Air. 'Winter's Bone' Wins at Gotham Awards

The 2010 Gotham Independent Film Awards were presented last night at Cipriani Wall Street in New York, with the rural drama "Winter's Bone" taking home the prizes for best feature and best ensemble. "Littlerock" won the award for "best film not playing at a theater near you," which comes with a one-week run at New York's Cinema Village and advertising in The New York Times.

Theater Indicates 'Spider-Man' Could Close Early

After weeks of delays while state officials conducted safety checks, Spider-Man on Broadway began previews Sunday. The show was plagued with technical issues, stopping five times and running over three hours long. It seems the staff at Foxwoods Theater, which hosts the show, don't have high hopes the $65 million production—the most expensive in Broadway's history—will improve. The theater's general manager, Erich Jungwirth, has reached out to several Broadway producers about keeping Foxwoods in mind as they develop and option new productions, according to several sources cited in both the New York Post and New York Times.

DGA Negotiations Go Into Third Week

Talks between the Directors Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have gone into a third week, with no news yet to leak. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the deal between the organizations may resemble the recent agreement between SAG and AFTRA, which included a three-year contract, 2-percent annual wage bumps, and a shift from first class to business and coach when traveling. Talks between DGA and MPATP are scheduled through the first week of December.
