Box Office: A 'True' Contender?

Though it was earning great reviews, there seemed to be a sense that the Coen Brothers' "True Grit" would be an also-ran next year, likely earning many nominations but not a real contender for Best Picture. After a stellar opening weekend--taking in over $36 million since Wednesday--I'm wondering if things are about to shift. Not only was it the best-ever opening for the Coens, it was the top-grossing opening weekend ever for a Western. Perhaps more importantly, everyone I spoke to who saw the film (and there were a lot) loved it--passionately.

Never underestimate passion in these races; while everyone admires "The Social Network," I'm wondering how many people truly love it. On the other hand, "Black Swan" has its detractors, but it's admirers are vocal and enthusiastic and the ballet drama also enjoyed a nice weekend, making over $6 million, for a total of $29 million in 24 days. And while Natalie Portman's Oscar nomination has long been a sure thing, it's looking more and more like Mila Kunis will be landing a supporting nod as well, further attesting to the film's growing fanbase. Several pundits I've spoken to think "Black Swan" can go the distance--particularly in the Best Director category. Even many of those who don't like it admit an admiration for Darren Aronofsky's work.
