CSA Presents Casting Career Seminar on April 9 in NYC

Csa logo_color On Saturday, April 9, the Casting Society of America (CSA) will present a free seminar in New York City for students and young adults who wish to pursue a career in casting for theater, film, and television.

"The tools, skill sets, and personality necessary to being a professional casting director still remain vague," says casting director Jodi Collins, speaking on behalf of the CSA mentorship committe. Therefore, "Casting: A Career Seminar" is intended to introduce participants to the role of the casting director in the entertainment industry, teach them the basic skills and qualities required of a casting director, and make a distinction between the creative and business aspects of the casting profession.

The seminar will be held April 9, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, 721 Broadway, NYC. Reception begins at 11 a.m. Space is limited, so registering in advance is recommended. To RSVP, email Matthew Maisto at [email protected].

CSA emphasizes that this special event is not intended for actors or performing artists, but rather those with production, filmmaking, and other "behind the scenes" experience, who are interested in learning more about casting as a career.

"Those who should think about a career in casting are folks that are impassioned by anything actor-based," Collins says, "and who love film, TV, and theater and the idea of how it all comes together. Those who are fascinated by what it means and takes to create the colors of a production using actors to achieve the best creative and business level would be well-suited candidates."

Past industry guest panelists have included casting directors Marc Hirschfeld, Rosalie Joseph, Tara Rubin, Daniel Swee, Cindy Tolan, Julie Tucker, and Collins. Guest panelists for this upcoming event have yet to be announced, but CSA promises that each speaker is an experienced casting director working in film, TV, and/or theater.

"As the casting director's contribution to film, television, and theater becomes ever more recognizable, it is by nature that the same is true of the profession itself," Collins says on behalf of CSA. "In an ongoing effort to maintain a high standard of professionalism and artistic integrity within this field, the Casting Career Seminar Series, organized with the Casting Society of America, is a unique, premiere series of educational seminars and open forums... With the changing climate of the modern business model, we feel it our responsibility as professionals and educators to foster upcoming generations."
