Seattle’s Intiman Moving Toward Reopening

Seattle’s Intiman Theater laid off its entire staff and closed its doors in April, but it has started moving toward reopening, The Seattle Times reported.  The theater has hired a Andrew Russell as a consulting artistic director, who will draft a production plan to show to potential supporters as well as to the theater’s creditors.

The Intiman won a regional theater Tony Award in 2006, but its good fortune only lasted a few years. In February, it announced a million dollar deficit, which Back Stage reported was attributed to gross financial mismanagement. Even after raising more than $ 450,000 in an attempt to save the theater, it closed.

The 28 year-old Russell, the theater's former associate producer, hopes to present a "micro-season" next summer, but first he needs funding. If he raises enough money, then Russell could stay in his position and more staff would be hired. When speaking to The Seattle Times, Russell alluded to sharing the theater with local art groups in the future.
