National Board of Review Names Winners

In a surprising move, The National Board of Review named Martin Scorsese's "Hugo" the Best Film of the Year today. This is certainly shaping up to be an interesting year, what with no definitive front-runner. (Sure, one could argue it's "The Artist," but it's not signed, sealed, and delivered the way "The King's Speech" was as of Sept. 2010.)

Scorsese also took the Best Director prize, and George Clooney was named Best Actor for "The Descendants." Supporting honors went to Shailene Woodley for "The Descendants" and Christopher Plummer for "Beginners." None of these are surprising, but what is a bit of a shock is to see Tilda Swinton sweep in for Best Actress for "We Need to Talk About Kevin." Swinton has been just outside the top five contenders (Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams, Charlize Theron) and this could be a big boost for her campaign.

The top films of the year, according to the NBR, are: "The Artist," "The Descendants," "Drive," "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2," "The Ides of March," "J. Edgar," "Tree of Life," and "War Horse." No big shocks here, though it is nice to see the Harry Potter finale getting some love.

Full list of winners after the jump.
