JC Cantu and Jen Levy Are Rising Phoenix, New CD at “Y&R”

This week in casting news, something a little different. There’s been some shiftin’ and a-shufflin’ happening in the L.A. casting world; we’re going to talk about that.

First: Two big names—JC Cantu and Jen Levy—have split from their respective offices to join forces under the moniker Rising Phoenix. To be clear, yes, this is a casting company, not a shadowy criminal syndicate or a yoga studio (I already made the yoga studio mistake with Automatic Sweat…. That was pretty awkward). Cantu was formerly with Mary Vernieu and Venus Kanani at Betty Mae, and I’m not even going to bother listing his credits since Betty Mae casts, like, 37 projects a week, so take your pick, I guess. Despite his departure, he will continue to share casting duties with Vernieu on the Jason Bateman–Olivia Wilde comedy “The Longest Week,” which I reported as a Betty Mae project last week. Levy had been with Emily Schweber since 2000, first as an associate, then as a CD, working on several low- to mid-budget films.

The new office already has several projects on its slate, including “Man With a Gun,” a project from Crime Scene Pictures and Nick Wechsler that was announced at Toronto. It’s about a vigilante who infiltrates two warring drug gangs that are wreaking havoc on a small border town. Rising Phoenix is also casting “Jesus Hates Zombies,” which I wasn’t able to find much on in the way of plot details, but judging from the title I’m thinking prequel to “The Notebook”? Anyhow, good luck to Cantu and Levy in their new endeavor.

In other news, Judy Blye Wilson has taken over casting duties on CBS’s long-running soap “The Young and the Restless.” She replaces Camille St. Cyr, who—I never watched the show, so I can’t vouch for her casting chops, but what a name! Fun to say, fun to write. Sounds like someone who still uses a cigarette holder, and has lots of embarrassing stories about the Gabor sisters. So congrats to Blye Wilson as well.

At the Artios Awards with 'Billy Elliot' Casting Director Nora Brennan

Billy Elliot the musical Last night at the Artios Awards in New York City, Back Stage caught up with casting director Nora Brennan, who casts children for the Broadway and national tour companies of Billy Elliot the Musical.

"It's very exciting," Brennan said of the annual event. "It's an opportunity for all the casting directors and agents to get together when they're not working, and recognize the best work going on in theater, and film, and television. I think it's a lot of fun, and it's thrilling."

The Artios Awards are presented each year to CSA members for outstanding achievement in casting in theater, film, and television, based on the criteria of originality, creativity, and contribution of casting to the overall quality of a project. In addition to the awards ceremony, the Casting Society of America strives to create a community and promote unity and cooperation among its members throughout the year.

"I know they do a lot of social things together," Brennan said. "CSA has a bowling league, and softball, and those kinds of things, which are great. And I know they're trying to promote a mentorship, which is fantastic. Really, the only way you can learn this is if someone teaches you."

Big Comedy Projects Abound

Summer is over, and everyone has a sad. The skies are overcast, there are no cherries on the shelves of your local supermarket, Starbucks is already pumping people full of pumpkin spice lattes, and the new fall shows have begun their plodding, inexorable march toward cancellation.

But not all is lost! In these times of downcast eyes and frownie faces, we look to the studio production executives, who, having donned their brightest tunics, prance through the studio backlots greenlighting comedy projects, spreading good cheer, and throwing BlackBerrys at their assistants’ heads. Callooh! Callay!

First up is “Rivals” from Warner Bros., formerly known as “Southern Rivals.” Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis play politicians competing for a House seat in South Carolina, who dig deep into their respective bags of dirty tricks to win. Sounds amazing, pretty much. It’s going to be way funnier than the actual 2012 elections, though that’s a pretty low bar. Allison Jones is tasked with fleshing out the campaign teams. “Rivals” shoots in October in New Orleans.

Next is “Burt Wonderstone” from New Line, which features America’s second-biggest comedy star guy, Steve Carell, as a flamboyant Vegas magician who struggles to regain his love of magic after his partner is killed in a tragic accident. Shoot dates are tentative, but hopefully the project will get going in January. Lisa Beach and Sarah Katzman will be casting it, but it’s not ready to go just yet.

Even next-er, “The Longest Week,” starring Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde, who is in every movie now, so I guess I didn’t need to mention her by name. Anyhow, Bateman plays an heir to a hotel fortune who gets cut off by his parents and is forced to move in with a friend. His friend has a hot girlfriend, and Bateman’s character gets the hots for her because she is Olivia Wilde, and have you seen Olivia Wilde? She’s hot! “The Longest Week” shoots next month in New York. It’s being cast by Mary Vernieu and JC Cantu at Betty Mae Casting.

See? You’re cheering up already, I can tell. I told you! This good news should tide you L.A. actors over until you remember that in a few short weeks our entire city will smell like feces because everyone fertilizes their lawns before the winter rains. Yay!

Pilots in September: It’s Like Christmas in July.

It being the development season, the fevered orgy of script buys and put pilot orders are making most of the news. But a few recently ordered pilots are already coming together for fall shoots.

Among them is “The Manzanis,” a project that’s been kicking around for the past few years that finally landed a pilot order from ABC, with Kirstie Alley attached to star. It’s being cast by Nikki Valko and Ken Miller ahead of a planned November shoot. The show is about a big Italian family that moves into a quiet suburban neighborhood and makes it…less quiet.
