Beauty and the Rock Star

74019239 Singer Regina Spektor is currently writing 10 to 15 original songs for a new musical production, “Beauty” which is set to open in 2011. The musical, which is semi based on the classic “Sleeping Beauty” story, is inspired by the one-act “Beauty” by Tina Ladau, who is collaborating with Spektor on this show.

According to the LA Times, producer Stuart Oken was attracted to “Regina’s kind of fresh voice,” and her classical training set her apart from other theater composers and satisfied their need for a voice to give the composition a “pop rock flavor.” Spektor joins the ranks of Duncan Sheik and Green Day by making the switch from rock to theater as Broadway sits saturated with movie stars taking a hiatus from the big screen. Competition for the strictly theater composer and actor is suddenly far more dramatic.

That foot in the door is more important than ever in 2009, and if you can prove yourself once you’re in, you’re in. Hopefully “Beauty” will prove that Spektor has the talent to keep doing exactly what she wants.
