Dish's Answer to Netflix: Blockbuster Movie Pass

Blockbuster If your chief adversary recently committed PR snafus and suffered a major dip in its stock, then it is definitely good time to unveil your business's new endeavor. Dish Network released details regarding its streaming service that will compete against Netflix, reported The Wrap on Friday. Blockbuster Movie Pass will offer a package of DVD by mail and online video, similar to Netflix's old model. Earlier this week, Netflix split its mail-order and movie streaming services by creating a wholly owned DVD-by-mail subsidiary, leading to major criticism and its stock dropping.

Though Dish, which acquired the bankrupt Blockbuster in April for $320 million, hopes to use the Blockbuster brand to entice subscribers to its service, its biggest challenge may not be Netflix or the possible bankruptcy of the United States Post Office that would put a dent in the company's mail option. In order for customers to subscribe to Blockbuster Movie Pass, they would have to sign up for Dish as well and that may drive potential subscribers away. The new service begins October 1.
