I Can Do This!
I'm kinda tired, so this will be short and sweet. I produced my first short today. After years of writing, thinking about producing, and thinking about directing, today I did it, and it wasn't nearly as difficult as I had made it out to be in my mind all of this time. It helped a lot that I was working with friends, and it was truly a collaborative effort because we complemented one another's strengths and weaknesses. No big "I"s and little "You"s. We came, we worked, we had fun. I glanced at the footage (still in the camera), and I think it's going to be good.
Tomorrow, I get to edit. I like editing, but it is not a quick process by any means, and because I have to deliver the footage on Monday, I have to get it all done tomorrow. I have my work cut out for me.
This is the first of many projects to come. After the shoot, I barbecued, and two of my friends - who happen to be the longest-running friendships that I have (15 years, and counting), hung out with me. I let them read the script for an episodic project that I started and then shoved into a binder. They laughed at it (good thing, because it's a comedy), and offered some useful suggestions. I will do some re-writes, and we plan to shoot the first 3 episodes in July. It's one way to do the kind of work that I want to do, even when nobody else is hiring me. It's a way to stay in front of the camera, while gaining knowledge about what goes on behind the camera. It's a way to give life to the characters that, 'til now, have existed solely in my mind, and on paper.
It's a beginning.
Good night, y'all.
