Auditioning is hard. I find the process rather cruel - the work and energy it demands requires that you care about going in and giving it your all, but in order to maintain some semblance of sanity, you have to let it all go and decide not to care about what just happened or where it might lead. One of my acting teacher always used to say that you just have to go "make an omelet." Carry on with your life. Eat your protein, throw in some veggies and you'll be fine.
I agree with the concept but I am not a big fan of eggs, so....
...here are some other ideas for curing the audition blues (other than drowning yourself in a bathtub of gin or whirling yourself into delirious denial).
1. Read something silly like a romance novel or a trashy magazine. Your brain will begin to melt, thereby disabling your ability to over-analyze everything.
2. Ride the Staten Island Ferry. It's free. You get to see the Statue of Liberty. Go when the sun is setting and stand on the deck so your hair whips in the wind and makes you feel like a movie star.
3. Sit in the Temple of Dendur at the Met. Just do it.
4. Listen to a favorite song. Really loud. And then listen to it again.
5. Do some dance moves on the subway platform. I personally like to practice my plies and always really wish I knew how to tap dance.
6. Mail yourself a card. (yes I KNOW it sounds super lame. At least maybe the idea of it will make you laugh). Pick out a really ridiculous one from CVS or something (are there any that aren't ridiculous?) Write whatever you want to write and then put it in the mail. Maybe you'll want to smile when you find it in your mailbox. Maybe you'll want to burn it. Both are therapeutic.
7. Read Shakespeare.
8. Buy some water balloons. Go to Central Park. Find a Water Fountain. 'Nuff said.
10. Go see a show. Or watch a movie. Seeing great performances always reminds me why I go on those silly auditions in the first place.
What do you do?
